Braintree Town went down in a thriller at Cressing Road on Tuesday night - but still gave their fans plenty to shout about.
The Iron lost 5-3 to newly-promoted Nationwide League division two side Cambridge United after giving them a real scare.
Ian Brown was the star man, hitting a hat-trick as Braintree fought back from 3-1 down to draw level at three goals apiece.
But two late goals won the day for Cambridge, who fielded a strong side for the fixture.
Manager Richie Powling said he was "very pleased" with the performance, saying: "It's often the the case that you raise your game when you play better opposition and I think we left them impressed.
"It was very entertaining for the crowd and we certainly played our part in that.
"It's very early days and you can't draw too many conclusions but everything's taking shape."
Braintree's next test is on Saturday when they entertain Essex rivals Billericay Town (kick-off 3pm), who play in the Ryman League premier division.
Billericay, under new manager Gary Calder, have a mass of new players this season and are making a real bid for honours.
Powling said: "It should be a much better test for us in many ways because they are at the standard we are aiming for - they are a league above us and that's where we want to be."
Braintree gave debuts to star names Chris Whyte and Ian Brown at the weekend - but still went down at Suffolk side Mildenhall Town. The Iron were playing their first friendly of the season and were under the watchful eye of new manager Richie Powling for the first time. Despite losing 2-0 at the newly promoted Jewson League side, Powling remained upbeat.
He said: "It was a good workout and at this stage of the season it's nothing more than that. We had an enjoyable afternoon. Players get their fitness levels up and that's what is important for the players."
