New Colchester United striker Jamie Moralee is relishing the prospect of forming a fearsome strike partnership with Lomana Tresor Lua Lua.

Moralee opened his account for the club during the U's 4-2 win over non-league AFC Sudbury but was overshadowed by the 20-year-old Lua Lua who bagged a hat-trick.

But the former Brighton forward believes the two can work well together to take on Division Two's top defences.

He said: "I think I'm good for him really. I've come off the pace of the game a bit, but I can put him in. I think our link-up play's been good so far - we're on the same wavelength. I'm enjoying the fact he scores and if I make it that doesn't bother me.

"I've just got to try to make him understand me a bit more, but if that happens it could be an interesting season."

The U's got a stern test in their latest pre-season game - a Harwich Charity Cup Centenary Shield match which went to extra time.

Moralee said: "We weren't expecting it to go that far. We'd had a tough day's training on Friday and this was a hard workout.

"We should have had many more goals but we played all the football and did beat them in the end."

Delighted U's boss Mick Wadsworth said: "We should have scored goals galore and Lomana could have ended up with 104. Lomana is clearly an exciting player, but far from the finished article.

"It's feast or famine with him and while he clearly excites the supporters, he still has to learn that football is a team game.

"But his understanding with Moralee is coming along very well and overall I was very pleased, especially as the game went into extra-time, because it meant we had to work a lot harder.

"One of the most important things for me was the spirit displayed within the team. Everyone is fitting in well and the lads all appear to be gelling well together - the old, the new, the well-established and the young."

Wadsworth said both Steve Forbes and young Adrian Webster stood out well, as did second half sub Sagi Burton.

But the U's boss also had a word of praise for the new Sudbury line-up. He said: "They played the game properly, in a great spirit and, really gave us a good work-out.
