School security has been stepped up at Trinity St Mary's Primary in a bid to beat vandalism.

Closed circuit television cameras have this week been installed at the school in South Woodham Ferrers town centre.

Head teacher Keith Bannister said: "We have had incidents of damage over a number of years to the roof, roof tiles and windows at weekends and holidays in particular. But the decision wasn't prompted by one major issue of security."

The cameras, which cost £2,450, were paid for out of a Standards Fund grant from Essex County Council and will span over the car park, playground and other strategic areas of the school.

They will provide 24-hour cover throughout the year.

The cameras were installed by Foxtrot Security Systems who provided their advice and labour free of charge.

Said Mr Bannister: "I was reticent to use the school budget at the expense of books and equipment and so was pleased to be able to apply for the Standards Fund grant and be able to enhance the school's security without affecting the quality of resources.

"This scheme will certainly give the staff and I an extra 'pair of eyes' during the school day and hopefully deter trespass and damage over the holiday period."

Security cameras seem to be a growing reality in schools today - the William de Ferrers School in South Woodham also has a security system.

A CCTV system is currently being considered by councillors at Maldon's Promenade Park and town centre car parks.
