Police are investigating a "very serious" attack in a park when two men were pushed to the ground and kicked in the head by a group of youths.

Both victims, in their thirties, were assaulted in Great Baddow Recreation Ground.

They were taken by ambulance to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, and it was believed at one stage one might need treatment in Oldchurch Hospital, Romford, which specialises in treating head injuries.

The two, one of whom was on holiday, were walking through the park about 10pm on Friday when there was a verbal row between them and a group of youth numbering up to 30.

It is believed a group of teenagers, possibly around six, may have been involved in the attack.

Acting Dc Simon Almond, from Chelmsford Police, who is investigating said: "This was a very serious attack. Both victims were very upset. They have head and body injuries where they were kicked while they were on the ground.

"We would like to hear from anyone who might have seen this incident.

"Both victims were taken to Broomfield Hospital where they were treated and released.

"One has serious bruising round his eyes and nose and cannot see properly. The other has injuries which are similar."

If anyone was in the community association building and witnessed the assault or was walking in the recreation ground they are asked to contact Dc Almond on Chelmsford 491212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
