Twelve Belfairs ladies played a team from Southend Police in very warm sunny conditions and, thanks to having three courtesy shots, pulled off a seven-point win.

Mrs S Goldring and Mrs S Ankin were top ladies' scorers on 38, while S Gash led for the Police on 39 from M Benning and M Lonergan (36).

The club's Texas Scramble was won by Sue Kaye, June Atkins, Maria Barham and Pat Skeels on 61.8 net.

It's victory for Nelson's crew

Ex-Southend United soccer star Garry Nelson swapped sports to lead Renault Trucks to victory on the last hole of the Hanover celebrity pro-am.

Now a PFA commercial executive and highly-successful author, Nelson helped Renault's Mike Villiers, Phil Edwards and Paul Sumpter to a massive 20 under par better ball score.

Also on 20 under, but runners-up on countback were Essex Cleaning Services' Jim Blackwell, Steve Kerley and Paul Hazle with Hartswood pro Mark Stokes.

Hanover claimed the prizes in the professionals' individual event. Senior pro Tony Blackburn led the way on 68 with assistant John Fryatt second two strokes back.

Debutant James' strong senior show

James Elliott, from the Essex Golf Club at Garon's Park, Southend, made a highly successful South Eastern League (northern section) debut for the County's senior team.

For he pulled off victories in both foursomes and singles as Essex won 7.5 - 4.5 for their first win of the season.

Thorpe Hall's Richard McEvoy and skipper Mike Pinner (Wanstead) were both also maximum men. This welcome turn in the fortunes of the senior side had probably come too late to capture the championship.

Scores (Essex first): Foursomes - Richard McEvoy (Thorpe Hall) and James Elliott (The Essex) beat William Salthouse and Tim Greenwood 4 and 2; Neil Ridewood and Andrew Fells lost to Stuart Sampfire and Richard Varney 5 and 3; David Peters and James Parker lost to Jonathan Petrew and Yasin Ali 4 and 2; Mark Whiten and Michael Pinner beat Scott Newton and Clive Austin 1 up.

Singles - McEvoy beat Salthouse 3 and 2; Ridewood lost to Sampfire 4 and 3; Elliott beat Ali 1 up; Fells lost to Varney 4 and 3; Peters beat Petrew 8 and 6; Parker beat Austin 2 and 1; Whiten halved with Newton; Pinner beat Greenwood 4 and 3.

Hat-trick just out of reach

Ballards Gore held their club championship over 36 holes, but holder Glen Hooper's bid for a hat-trick of wins was not to be.

Nobody broke 80 in the strong swirling morning winds. Sean Doody and Ian Brogan were on 80 with Tom Kennedy a stroke behind.

Doody and Brogan broke away from the pack in the afternoon. Brogan picked up birdies at one and seven then had a spell of steady pars.

A run of bogeys undid all his hard work, but a birdie at 18 gave him a three over par 76 and a 156 total which most thought would be enough for victory.

However, Sean Doody had other ideas. He had a poor start to the front nine with three successive bogeys. He parred the next six to be out in three over.

Fireworks started with birdies at 11 and 13, but a bogey at 15 held him up. However, a birdie at the last hole was enough for victory on 154.

Silver ladies shine

Basildon ladies' silver team continued their winning streak with a 4-3 victory over Belfairs.

They are now unbeaten in their division and, with two more matches to play, hope to finish the season without a defeat.

Del Boy one off record

Derek "Del Boy" Marney, who plays off eight, had a blistering afternoon round, only one shot above the course record, to finish with a net 60 in the Castle Point club handicap championship.

When added to his morning 70 this gave him a total of 130 and victory by four shots over Ian Moore. Two shots behind in third place was last year's winner Alan McIntyre.

Glorious Garside

Golfers at Thorpe Hall enjoyed excellent weather and course conditions for their monthly competitions with David Garside winning the division one July Stableford.

The five-handicapper had 39 points and beat S Johnson (8) on countback.

Division two honours went to T King (13) on 44 from P Green (24) on 39.

The division one medal winner was L Higgon. The six-handicapper beat R Skelding on countback after both he and his rival, who plays off 11, had 66.

In division two, J Tapscott (20) won on 67 from M Ashby (17) on 69.

Three ahead of field

Three players with scores of plus six led the field in the annual Yardley Cup, an 18-hole bogey competition, at Basildon.

James Dennison, an 18-year-old, won on countback thanks to a brilliant last nine holes which he covered in a four under par 33. This enabled him to finish plus six on the back nine after a moderate front nine level.

His front nine included an eagle two on the 338-yard seventh. Also on plus six was Steve Way and cadet Marc Etherington.

Ex-Basildon member Tom Arundel is a real hole-in-one specialist. It's now 29 years since he achieved his first ace at the new town course.

Last weekend he had the ninth hole-in-one of his career. It came at the 18th at Boyce Hill, his current club, and was his fourth at this hole.
