The Tiptree Charity Cup - one of the county's most prestigious junior football competitions - has survived the threat of extinction.

Placed in jeopardy at the end of last season by a lack of support, the 66-year-old competition, which has ploughed thousands of pounds into local charities, was handed an 11th-hour reprieve at a special meeting in Tiptree United's clubhouse, the competition headquarters, on Tuesday night.

Delighted secretary John Smaller said yesterday: "I am very pleased the clubs in the area want the Tiptree Charity Cup to carry on. It was in grave danger of folding at the end of last season because of a lack of support.

"But the group of clubs present at the meeting fully supported the view it should carry on."

The competition, which was launched with just eight clubs and one trophy in 1936, has provided cup football for clubs of Essex and Suffolk Border League, Mid-Essex League and Colchester and East Essex level since it began.

In recent years demand was so great the tournament was divided into three sections - a Premier Cup; Division One and Veterans (Over 35).

The competition almost folded once before, 15 years ago, but the clubs rallied round and came to the rescue that time as well.

Any club wishing to compete in next season's competition is requested to contact John Smaller on 01621 816927.
