The brains behind a plan to light a section of riverside have made a U-turn.

Witham Youth Council has withdrawn support for plans to light the town's River Walk - despite suggesting the scheme.

Town councillors were shocked when they were told delegates on the youth council had dropped support for the plan.

But at a full town council meeting last night it was decided the matter was closed and the plans would go ahead.

Kathie Tearle said: "I'm concerned about the plans which were shown to the youth council by outside members as they were inaccurate and gave the wrong picture.

"There were up to 11 lights on the design - there should have been three. It is irresponsible to give young people such distorted facts."

Michael Lager said: "The reason for the lights remains the same - that of safety and this should be supported."

Mayor Tom Hewitt said although the youth council was made up of newly-elected members, the issue had been resolved by the previous group and therefore its support could not be withdrawn.

But he added there was some flexibility over design.

Last year youths asked for the lighting for safety reasons. But fears were raised over the harm to wildlife.

Last week, Braintree District Councillors, despite public protest, narrowly voted to support the scheme.

Lights for Bramston Sport Centre, in Bridge Street, which neighbours the River Walk were also given support by Witham Town Council. The plans will now go to Braintree Council.
