Warren Aspinall was officially installed as Colchester United's new team captain on Monday.

And David Gregory is to be the U's new club captain. They replace former skipper Richard Wilkins who asked to go on the transfer list three weeks ago.

Layer Road boss Mick Wadsworth said when revealing his new appointments: "I have made Warren team captain because he has good leadership qualities on the pitch.

"He is also a very experienced player who has played in every division in the Football League, including the top level with Everton.

"That experience will stand us in good stead as we go into our new Division Two season. David Gregory's role as club captain will mean he will act as the representative between the players and management.

"He is a very good professional and a good servant to the club. He will also be in charge of affairs involving the players off the pitch."

Aspinall, meanwhile, was struggling to be fit for yesterday's first home friendly against Division One neighbours Norwich City.

The former Everton and Aston Villa midfielder had strained stomach muscles, but Gregory, who suffered a dead leg in Saturday's goalless friendly at Canvey Island, should have recovered in time.

French defender Fabrice Richardl missed the match because of a thigh strain.
