One young Braintree athlete experienced the highs and lows of sporting emotions at the English Schools' Championships at Bury St Edmunds on Friday and Saturday.
In his heat of the Junior Boys 100m Tim Ashford, 14, of Helena Romanes School, Great Dunmow, fell at the start, losing all momentum and enabling the other seven boys to get away from him.
On Saturday, as part of the Junior Boys 4 x 100m relay squad, Ashford helped record the fastest qualifying time of all the competing counties to secure a place in the afternoon's final.
In that race as the last runner Tim powered down the straight overhauling all the boys ahead of him dipping at the finish line to win the race and thereby earning a Gold medal with the Essex team.
