A motoristwho drove a Ford Transit the wrong way down a one-way street was found to have three times the legal limit of alcohol in his breath.

Vincent Evans, 53, of Orwell Road, Clacton, was seen by police in Rosemary Road shortly after 12.30pm on June 23, Colchester magistrates heard on Friday.

Amanda Stear, prosecuting, a test showed Evans had 109mcgs of alcohol in every 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Evans admitted drink driving and was jailed for 28 days and banned from driving for two years.

He had further admitted being drunk and disorderly on March 25 at an earlier hearing and was ordered to serve one day's detention.

Paul Goddard, mitigating, said Evans had had a drink with his girlfriend and they had some sort of argument when he was asked to leave her flat.

"He wasn't familiar with that part of Clacton. He wasn't familiar with the one-way system," he said.

He added the drunk and disorderly charge related to the consequences of an argument with his girlfriend.

"There has been a stormy relationship between the two for the four to five years they have been together," he said.
