A shocked motorist was punched on the nose as he found himself the victim of an attempted car-jacking.
The Canvey man was driving along London Road, Vange, in the early hours of the morning when two men forced him to stop.
Det Con Doug Garton of Basildon police, who is investigating the case, said: "One youth walked out into the middle of the road in front of him. The victim tried to swerve but the other youth stepped in front of him, making him brake, before running off."
The Canvey man then climbed out of his car but kept close to the door. As the taller youth approached, he got back inside the car, locking the door, but wound down the window.
DC Garton said: "He was told to hand over his car but refused. He then got punched on the nose and drove away feeling very confused."
The youth who ran away was short and wore dark clothing.
The man who punched him was 19 years old, of medium build and about 6 feet tall. He had black, scruffy hair, collar-length and spiky on top.
He was clean-shaven with long sideburns and was wearing a long-sleeved shirt which was unbuttoned.
He spoke with a local accent.
Det Con Garton said: "He was pretty shocked. We would like to hear from anyone who can help us trace these men."
