BRENTWOOD I................................181 all out
COLCHESTER I.......................................174-8
(Match drawn)
(Shepherd Neame Essex League Division One)
Following on from their excellent batting performance the previous week, Brentwood disappointed against an accurate Colchester attack, with the top order failing to provide the platform for a match-winning score.
All-rounder Nick Haste (47) was in good form with the bat and with wicket-keeper Ben Cocklin (25) taking a rare opportunity to display his batting talents, Brentwood could only total 181 all out.
However, the early toils meant that the innings went beyond the 52-over threshold, with the result that Brentwood forfeited all batting points.
In reply, Colchester made a spirited effort to win the game in the limited time available to them.
However, left arm seamer Danesh Kayani was in fine form with the ball, keeping the opponents at bay and maintaining Brentwood's interest in victory.
In the event, the clock won, with the Colchester score standing at 174 for eight.
Brentwood second team continued their quest for promotion in what, ultimately, was a convincing win over Old Southendians.
On a perfect batting pitch at the Old County Ground, Old Southendians made 222 for four before declaring.
Skipper Stuart Townson was the only Brentwood bowler to make an impact, his three for 55 representing an excellent return in such favourable batting conditions.
In reply, Brentwood made 223 for two, with plenty of time to spare.
Spectators were treated to a remarkable innings by run-machine Stuart Fomes who, notwithstanding the long County Ground boundaries and despite being hampered by a leg injury, savaged the bowling in hitting a majestic 146, his innings including nine sixes and 12 fours.
After a first-wicket stand of 140 with Dave Berry (23) sensibly playing second-fiddle and giving his rampaging partner the strike, Brentwood were able to cruise home.
Brentwood third team posted a high score against Old Southendians, but were unable to bowl their opponents out and had to settle for another draw.
With all four top batsmen in good form (Dean Goddard 66, Jason Swan 64, Ken Lingwood 60no and Paul Larner 44), Brentwood raced to a total of 263 for four.
Old Southendians had reached 195 for six (Zamir 3-60) when time ran out.
Brentwood's fourth team emerged second best from their home game against Hainault & Clayhall.
Their visitors made 181 for nine (Mick Roach, Andy Fryd and Vithy each taking two wickets) and Brentwood replied with a modest 111 all out, only Adrian Smith (28) showing much resistance.
This Saturday (July 10), Brentwood's first team are away to Horndon-on-the-Hill while the second team play Harold Wood at the Old County Ground.
