Wacky Billericay couple David and Fay Keary made it a wedding day to remember - by getting married in fancy dress.

David, 41, showed he was out of this world when he donned a space suit instead of a traditional morning suit.

Fay, 43, said of her spaceman bridegroom: "I thought it was a great idea because I am just as wacky as he is."

Fay ditched the traditional bride's white dress and sauntered up the aisle in a belly dancing outfit.

All 11 bridesmaids, aged 13 to 80, were also decked out in belly dancers' costumes.

The happy couple exchanged cat-shaped rings at the ceremony because of Fay's work in rescuing abandoned animals.

Guests to the weird wedding at Brentwood register office also rose to the fancy dress challenge.

At least 40 turned up in costumes ranging from a pope and nun to German and American policemen.

The idea for the fancy dress wedding was hatched by David just after he proposed to Fay last year.

David, an electrical technician, said: "I've always been unusual. I used to study the stars and astronomy and I kept track of all the Apollo missions and Spacelab.

"I though the nearest I could get to space was wearing a space suit."

It was no easy task finding the NASA style suit, but David phoned the BBC who put him in touch with a London costume firm.

It was a little simpler for Fay to get her belly dancer costume because she made if for herself -- as well as for nine of the 11 bridesmaids!

Fay said: "We didn't want any gifts so we asked everyone to bring cameras and get lots of action shots and send us a set of prints so we can make up a big scrap book."

It is not the first time David has hit the headlines with crazy stunts.

Around 15 years ago he arranged to drop in on a girlfriend's 30th birthday party -- by helicopter.
