A proposal for major changes to a Chelmsford road in a bid to encourage the use of public transport has been criticised by local MP Simon Burns.

Questionnaires outlining plans to improve access and safety through New London Road have been distributed asking the opinions of residents, schools, businesses, bus passengers and car users.

The alterations to the road, which provides one of the major bus routes between Galleywood and Broomfield Hospital, include removal of all-day parking, providing a bus and cycle lane and new-short-term parking for residents, businesses and visitors.

But Mr Burns, MP for Chelmsford West, said although he welcomes the idea of better crossing facilities, proposals for a bus lane and the introduction of a one-way system around certain roads was a "nonsense."

"I am not convinced this will enhance traffic flow or do anything to encourage less use of the motor car.

"To think parents may start using public transport to take their children to school is a pie in the sky hope because, in the vast majority of cases, it is just not a feasible alternative," he said.

He also criticised the questionnaire because he feels it did not ask whether people support or oppose the proposal of the bus lanes.

He urged people to attend the planned exhibition this weekend which he plans to visit on Saturday at Christchurch, New London Road, and express their views to the local authority.

The exhibition also takes place on Friday June 25 while questionnaires are available from the borough council on 01245 606468.

The closing date for consultation is July 2.
