Drivers who fail to use their seat belts face a crackdown across Basildon, Billericay and Wickford.
Police are carrying out random checks on drivers to make sure they are driving safely in an attempt to reduce the number of injuries caused in accidents.
Sgt Basil Thornton, who is leading the campaign, explained why they are targeting drivers not wearing seat belts.
He said: "We are still seeing a large number of incidents where drivers are injured through not wearing their seat belts.
"Although the figure has been reduced since the laws were changed the figure is still too high."
"From now drivers across the whole Basildon Division, including Billericay, Wickford and Laindon, face being stopped if they are not wearing their seat belt.
"The enforcement will be stepped up with stop checks, roadside checks and random checks.
"The injury accident rate figures are still quite high and people are still not getting the message that they need to wear their seat belts."
