Motorists have been given a helping hand in the fight against car crime thanks to the efforts of a crime-busting team of residents.

New signs which warn car owners to be on their guard have been put up in four car parks around Leigh and Eastwood to reduce the number of cars being stolen and broken into.

The signs were the idea of Ken Burch and members of the Leigh and Eastwood Neighbourhood Watch Association.

Working in partnership with Southend Council and Essex Police, the signs were funded by the sale of personal attack alarms and property marking pens by the Leigh Crime Prevention Panel.

Shirley Morris, the community crime prevention officer, said: "With car crime running high in several local car parks, the community felt it was time to take action and put up these signs in areas being targeted by thieves.

"The signs show just how community based action and partnerships can work."
