Essex have awarded a contract to fast bowler David Thompson.
The 23-year-old right armer has impressed in the county's 2nd XI this season with six and seven wicket hauls so far.
Lambeth-born, Thompson toured with the England under-19 side as a youngster.
He has played at county level before with both Surrey, in 1994, and Lancashire, in 1997.
Essex County Cricket Club's assistant secretary Malcolm Field said: "He's been getting quite a few wickets for the 2nd XI and we decided to offer him a contract. The players all reckon he's quite quick and as we had an opening, we'll give him a chance."
Meanwhile play looked set to be delayed at very best at Ilford today where Essex were due to entertain Hampshire in a Championship clash.
The ground was underwater at 8am but was soon draining, and Field was hopeful of a start later in the day.
