Goalkeeper Alec Chamberlain will be playing Premiership football for Watford next season.
But there were mixed fortunes for the other former Colchester United and Ipswich Town stars who were playing in the Bank Holiday, Wembley promotion play-off finals.
Chamberlain, who made more than 200 League and cup appearances for the U's between 1982-87 before his £80,000 transfer to Everton, played a starring role in goal for Graham Taylor's Hornets as they saw off Bolton Wanderers in Monday's Division One final.
Ipswich's former central defender Steve Palmer was also in Watford's winning side.
There was no joy, however, for Leyton Orient's former U's pair Scott Barrett and Stuart Hicks, who finished on the losing side against Scunthorpe in the Division Three final.
Former Layer Road loanee Carl Asaba also saw a winner's medal snatched from his grasp as Manchester City came from two goals down in injury time to beat Gillingham on penalties in Sunday's Division Two final.
The result, however, means Division One football next season for former Portman Road defender Tony Vaughan who moved to Maine Road from Ipswich in a deal worth £1.35 million almost two years ago.
