Sixty young hopeful golfers from 26 golf clubs in Essex will be competing for a place in the Championship Final to be held in Georgia, USA, when they tee off at Braintree Golf Club tomorrow.
Braintree Golf Club have decided to combine their Annual Junior Open Competition, sponsored as in previous years by Cabana Soft Drinks, with the prestigious Daily Telegraph/Center Parcs Junior Golf Championship.
The field, aged between 11 and 17, includes 24 single figure handicappers and two girls.
The winner will join the national leaderboard with the best gross scores qualifying for the televised, 36 hole strokeplay final at The Cloister and Sea Island, Georgia, USA in September.
Visitors are welcome to Braintree Golf Club on June 2, and the course will be in excellent condition having just hosted the Senate Electrical PGA Charity Open a week earlier. Channels team compete well
The Channel's GC Men's Thornton Cup Team travelled to West Essex Golf Club last Sunday.
The morning foursomes found Channels trailing 3-2, Jeb Storrey and Dick Seabright plus Simon Larner and Ross Wilson being the winners.
In the afternoon the youthful West Essex team took advantage of their local knowledge and gained a 10-5 win over the Channels team of Simon Larner, who settled for a half after 20 holes all level, Ross Wilson 1 down after 20 holes, Jeb Storrey a 3&2 win, Paul Bramley a 2 up win after a marvellous second shot from a ditch on the 16th to gain a par and halve the hole.
Channel's last 1/2 point was gained by young Anthony Everitt on the agreed half taken at the 16th.
The other team members, Dave Curtis, Paul Wilson, Gavin Wood and Colin Lockwood had played well but not well enough on the day against some talented youngsters.
One of the West Essex players, Sam Mason played 3 under scratch, good for a 14 year old.
The Channel's Men's May Medal produced a Division One winner in Anthony Everitt with a 76/6/70 scoreline with Jeb Storrey one behind on 77/6/71.
Peter Rawlinson won Division Two with 86/19/67 ahead of Steve Malins 85/16/69. Ross Wilson got the scratch prize with a gross 74.
On Friday, the Famous Grouse Competition was won by Dick Seabright and Peter Baxter with a foursomes net 68. Gerry Hall and Phil Ryan were second on 68.5 and Simon Larner and Martin De'ath third on 70.5.
Last Saturday was the Channel's Challenge Day and this team aggregate stableford event was won by Dave Curtis, Jeb Storrey, Barry Cloughton and Mike Thomas on 135 points.
Second were Andy Francis, Janet Sorrell, Sue and Alan Mitchell with 130 points. Third were Paul Wilson, Ian Hudgell, Julian leader and Jim Culleton (129), one point clear of Mike and Hilary Steen, Steve Morley and Marion Ballard.
Channel's also hosted a Ladies Open Competition. The leading pair was from The Warren G.C., Sue Pestell and Agnes Hill with 42 points, on countback from Shirley Jiggins and Bridget Couch of Gosfield Lakes.
The Channel's ladies feature in the results from the Spring Trophy played on Thursday.
The closely contested A.M. Stableford produced a leading five ladies with Jane Malins 41 points, Karen Bennett 41, Maria Davis 40, Jenny Hartnett 40 and Sandra Bramley 39. Pam Howard won the Front 9 with 21 points, and Jo Hanniman the Back 9 with 21.
The PM Texas Scramble was won by Sheila Emslie, Lyn Fazzani, Chris Miller and Lesley Welham with a net 22.4, Ruth Dingle, Karen Baxter, Pat Harper and Jean Gale second (net 25.
The Lady Captain, Liz Gander and her partner Maureen Woollcott lost to a pair from Maldon G.C. in the second round of the Munro Foursomes.
However, twins Maria and Helen Davis continued their winning run in the Daily Mail Foursomes when they won 3 & 2 in the fourth round against Basildon.
The Channels Men's Jubilee Cup, on Sunday, was won by Peter Baxter with a gross 79, h/cap 12, net 67. Alex Albon was second on countback with 89,21,68. Early finisher Mark Daw had to wait to find that his 83,15,68 had only earnt him third spot. Seven-a-side golf
Last Saturday seven pairs of Regiment Way Ladies took on seven pairs of Gentlemen from Regiment Way in the friendly Ladies v Gents match.
It is understood that the Captain Nigel Savage and his partner Dudley Joyce held back a little in their match against Tour Professional Wendy Dicks and her partner Sue Jones to obtain a halved result and a half in the overall result, Ladies 3 1/2, Gents 3 1/2. Brockwell's May heyday
The Three Rivers Golf Ladies section competed for the May Medal which resulted in Toni Brockwell winning the First Division with a net 74.
Shirley Daver was victorious in the Second Division, also with a nett 74.
The Ladies Bronze team played hosts to Belfairs on Wednesday, and an enjoyable match resulted in a resounding 7-0 win for the Three Rivers ladies, whose captain was Pat Fletcher and team was Margaret Mann, Dolly Wilson, Dorothy Curtis, Julia Billing, Ria Haughey, Pat Midgley and Margaret Leigh. Birch match goes to sudden death
Birch Grove Golf Club were hosts to Chelmsford for the fourth round of the National Mail on Sunday competition.
Playing to a format of four individual matches with the last player going out again in the event of a tie, Chelmsford found themselves two down after two but pulled back to bring the score to 2-2.
However, on the sudden death play off, Bird Grove made a birdie on the first hole and took themselves into the fifth round.
The Chelmsford team was Les Cutbush, Sean Dalton, Simon Gibbings, Paul Connell and Keith Davies.
The Ladies section turned out in force for the first of the major internal events, the Ladies Spring Meeting. 94 ladies took part and 98 joined the ladies captain Eileen Croker for the evening meal.
The morning event was an 18 hole Stableford Competition with the afternoon given over to a 9 hole coloured ball fun game.
The results of the Spring Meeting were: Scratch prize: Trish Wilson (37 points gross). Silver: 37 points net Diane Robinson, 34 Alison Evans, 33 points Brenda Parsons. Bronze: 33 points Mary Crook, 32 points Sonia Ormsby on countback from Nita Lloyd, 31 points Hilary Beck. Bronze II: 33 points Gill Jerram, 32 points Annette Haustrop on countback from Margaret Freeman, 30 points June Round on countback from Jan Ette Everitt and Frances Holloway. Afternoon holes 1-9: Ann Simpson, Maureen Quinn, Judy Williams with 66 points. Holes 10-18 Trish Wilson, Pat Garner, Jean Johnson (62 points).
The more mature ladies have competed for the Betty Box Cup, which was presented in 1973 by K D Box Esq. in memory of his wife.
Played as an 18 hole Stableford Competition, the winner was Jan Pearce with 35 points.
Runner up on 32 points was Margaret Freeman followed by 31 points Maureen Pond on countback from Myram Proctor, Carol Golbourn and Joan Curley, 29 points Nita Lloyd on countback from Beryl Gardiner.
