An idea which developed from a golf lesson just over a year ago has culminated in the takeover of the Colchester and Lexden Golf Centre.

The new owners of the Spring Lane facility are Dean and Alison Nevill of Nevill Developments who, along with director of golf Phil Grice, are aiming to turn the facility into the area's leading teaching and family golf centre.

Mr Nevill said: "This is a completely new direction for our company but we are totally committed to the venture.

"Under the guidance of Phil Grice we are looking to make this the place to come to learn and play golf for the whole family."

"And it will be accessible to everyone, so even a complete beginner will be able to take up the game of golf at an affordable level."

The new owners have decided to keep the Lexden Wood Golf Club name but to reflect the change of emphasis the site will also be known as Colchester's Family Golf Centre.

Plans are already in place to develop the site, which will include a new clubhouse and a larger pro-shop.

The course will undergo an upgrade under expert George Shields, the driving range will be improved, and a new section for youngsters will be set up.

One of the country's leading experts, George Shields, who has helped set up PGA championship courses, along with head greenkeeper Alan Turner, is already working to improve the fairways and greens.

The driving range is to be upgraded and the existing open bays will be roofed. A new section for youngsters, The Tiger Club, is being set up so children can learn the game from as young as four years to 14 on the pitch and putt course.

Phil Grice explained: "We have already laid the foundations and now we can go ahead with our plans.

"We are reviewing our pricing structure and there will be new deals for our existing members and we will be introducing a new Pay and Play membership scheme.

"People new to the game will be able to get the full benefit of a golf club membership, at a price they can afford.

"We want to get the whole family involved, mum, dad and the children."
