A pensioner was killed while crossing the busy London Road in Westcliff.
Molly Brown, 80, suffered serious head injuries in an accident involving a white Leyland Daf lorry being driven by a 24-year-old Hertfordshire man.
Mrs Brown's husband was today being comforted at home in Briarwood Drive, Leigh.
Mrs Brown was certified dead on arrival at Southend Hospital. The driver of the lorry was said to be traumatised by the incident.
The accident happened at 11.30am yesterday close to the junction with Hamlet Court Road.
Police want to hear from pedestrians and drivers who witnessed the accident.
