Shoppers beware - six Wickford folk have had their purses snatched in the same day, say police.
The attacks happened within minutes of each other in the town centre and many of the victims were described as "elderly and vulnerable".
Police are looking at possible links between the crimes and are hunting a gang from outside of town, possibly of eastern European origin.
One retired man lost nearly £400 in cash as he was shopping in a store in the High Street.
Sgt Andy Willmott, of Basildon police, said: "We just want people to be aware. If they witness strange behaviour they should call the police. These are vulnerable members of society being preyed on."
If you can help please call Basildon police on 01268 532212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
