Young cancer sufferer Adam Liones had a very important job for such a small person at Somerfield in Wickford.
The five-year-old, from Wickford, was invited to cut the red ribbon and reopen the town centre store after a major refurbishment to bring it up to date.
Around £1 million has been spent on installing customer toilets, a coffee shop and a rotisserie and replacing every fridge and freezer unit.
Manager Martin Aldis said: "We collect instore for Adam, who has eye cancer, to raise money for the hospital that treats him and thought he might like to help with the relaunch.
"His brother helped him out and we presented them with a CD radio cassette player to say thanks."
