Sunday morning was breezy for the 5.30am start of the Veterans National "50".

Dave Nock started at No.1 and soon left the rest behind and clocked a personal best time of 1h.59.33s.

This was not bettered until No.40, S Clark, of Bournemouth, came back in 1.58.40.

There was then another wait for No.71, the eventual winner with 1.55.52, John French of Bath, followed by No.70 Alan Cornish (API Resprays), who was third in 1.58.53.

However, the top prizes in VTTA events are on the age standard and these all went to Northern riders with Jim Goodwin, Sheffield, heading the list, followed by former professional Brian Haskell (Huddersfield) and Roger Little (Altrincham Ravens), who led the winning team in.

Best on age standard in the East Anglian group was Merv Player (Herts Wheelers) who scored a surprise win at the expense of 'top-man' Eric Marsh (Leo).

Chelmer were the team winners with Dave Nock backed by Mary Horsnell and Peter Horsnell, Mary being one of only two ladies among the 82 entrants.

Some locals decided that it was too early in the season to tackle the distance, like Chelmer's Bill Broadfield, he was on holiday in Minorca.

These times are from the provisional result. Wins for Glendene riders

Two Glendene C.C. riders rode to victory at the Team Sport and Publicity Series at Eastway on Saturday. First success went to Murat Ozdenya who came first in the Fourth Category Race.

He broke away with two other riders at about the halfway stage of the 32 mile race and won the sprint for first place. Meanwhile in the bunch behind Savash Anibal won the bunch sprint for fourth overall.

Later on that day in the same promotion Terry Devine won the veterans race.

He and team mate Colin Mannakee were part of a break of 15 riders who lapped the rest of the field in the 32 lap race of the one mile long circuit.

With three laps to go Devine rode away from the group and stayed away to claim victory.

Mannakee ensured that no other rider threatened his team mate's dash for the line and finished in 12th place.
