Jehovah's Witnesses from all over Essex have paid out for a piece of equipment which will revolutionise the way they are treated in hospital.

They yesterday presented an argon beam coagulator to Basildon Hospital, which will keep blood loss during surgery to a minimum.

The new development has been welcomed by consultant surgeon St John Collier, who said: "It is ideal to reduce blood loss in major operations where there is a large raw surface."

David Ware, chairman of the hospital's Jehovah's Witness liaison committee, explained their beliefs did not permit blood to come back into the body once it had left the circulatory system.

He said Basildon was at the forefront of bloodless surgery.
