Fourteen-year-old Braintree swimmer Ruth Fay is to take part in a cross-Channel marathon as part of her quest to help find a cure for cancer.
Ruth, of Nelson Gardens, is determined to help the fight against the disease after seeing two close relatives suffering from its effects.
She is joining Channel swimmer Keith Murphy in a six-person, 12-hour relay swim in July, and is now in regular training with the Witham Dolphins swimming club, based at Bramston Sports Centre.
This week, her mother Caralyn, 41, spoke of her determination to help her daughter realise her dream of raising hundreds of pounds for Cancer Research.
"Ruth has been a keen swimmer since she was little," she said. "Unfortunately, we have a family history of cancer -- two of Ruth's uncles have had the disease.
"She is obviously concerned and wants to do something about it. She is very excited about the cross-Channel swim and hopes to get as much sponsorship as possible to do her bit for the charity."
Ruth, a pupil at Alec Hunter School, is being joined in her training by sisters Sarah, 13, and Hannah, 12, who are also Dolphins members.
She also has the support of brothers Adam, 20, Daniel, 19, and Jonathan 17, as well as father Desmond, 58.
Ruth has already pledged £100 to take part in the swim, but is keen to raise as much money as possible. If you can help her, call the family on 01376 550493.
