Jason Cundy has vowed to bounce back from his latest footballing setback.

The former Tottenham and Chelsea defender can now add Ipswich Town as an ex-club after being surprisingly released along with four other players.

Cundy missed virtually all the season after injuring an ankle last year while skipping.

He managed only three substitute appearances after coming back but could not shift Manuel Thetis from the starting line-up.

Cundy said: "These things happen in football. It is a blow but I will bounce back and find another club.

"I was a bit shocked but the longer the season went on without being offered anything, the more worried I got.

"In the end the Gaffer (George Burley) called me in and said he could not afford to keep me, it is as simple as that."

Cundy joined Town from Spurs in October 1996 for £200,000. He battled back from testicular cancer and has devoted a lot of his time while out injured doing charity work.

Burley said: "The decision not to offer Jason a new contract was a very difficult and reluctant one.

"He is one of the most professional players I have worked with and has shown great courage and commitment to Ipswich Town on and off the field."

David Theobald, who spent part of last season on loan at Braintree Town, has joined Brentford on a free transfer.

Scotland youth keeper Colin Stewart, Terry Bowes and Derek Delaney have all been released.

But it was good news for former Colchester schoolboy Chris Keeble who has won another year's contract after battling back from an ankle operation.
