After their disappointing performance in Saturday's league game, Brentwood had the opportunity to recover their poise in Sunday's match at home to Camberley from the Surrey League.

Brentwood did, in fact, emerge victorious after a pulsating limited-overs game (50 overs per side); but the result was in doubt until the last ball of the last over.

Put in to bat, Brent-wood again got off to a dreadful start, losing three wickets with only 17 runs on the board.

However, Gavin Todd (top scoring with 40) and skipper Micky Davis (38) steadied the ship with some sensible batting' and, with valuable contributions from Nick Haste (32) and Danny Hazle (31), Brentwood had reached 185 for nine at the end of the 50th over.

This was a challenging, but not impossible, target on a true pitch but slow outfield.

The Camberley batsmen proceeded cautiously against some good seam bowling by Richard Whitehall and Nick Haste.

But, with wickets in hand, they gradually opened up and were soon well up with the clock.

However, Micky Davis manipulated his bowling resources astutely. Graeme Walker (1-19 off 10 overs) and Richard Whitehall (1-23 off 10 overs) in particular kept the batsmen on a tight rein, and with Nigel Porter and Nick Haste also bowling well and weighing in with two wickets apiece, the outcome of the game was always in doubt.

The last over arrived at 8.30 in the evening (after an interruption for rain), with Camberley needing 12 to win.

This proved too much - though a six off the last ball would have seen them home - and Brentwood left the field in good spirits after such a hard-fought but narrow victory.
