David West of Essex Stragglers Orienteering Society has taken second place at the British Orienteering Championships.
The event was held close to Lake Windermere and David travelled up for the weekend with approximately 25 members of the club. David competed in the boys under-15 class, losing the title by a matter of seconds.
This achievement was made even more impressive by the fact that his compass broke half way round his 5.3km course.
As David himself put it it's so frustrating to lose for a simple thing like breaking a compass.
Club mate Miriam Pugh took top position in the girls under-19 non championship event, continuing her success from earlier in the year.
The British Relay Championships were held the day after the individual event and once again Essex Stragglers had a star team.
Emma Johnson, Joanne West and Sebastian Pugh competed in the under-13 relay. All had storming runs to take third place, despite the fact they were competing against all male teams.
