Simon Dainty, aged 17, from Leavenheath, Colchester, has joined the race for a place in the final of the 1999 Daily Telegraph/Center Parcs Junior Golf Championship.
He shot a 74 to win his qualifying round at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club and must now wait until late August to discover whether he has earned a place in the final to be held at The Cloister and Sea Island, Georgia, USA in September.
The 21 finalists will compete for this year's title at Ocean Forest Golf Club, home of the 2001 Walker Cup.
The girls' winner was Anna Garside, aged 17, from Southend on Sea, who shot a 78.
