Maldon Yacht Club's Iain and Philip Marshall overcame rig failure to take third place at Blue Circle's Snipe Open in Kent at the weekend.

They started off with two firsts on Saturday but when one of their shrouds pins broke in the heavy gusts, their mast was bent.

They managed to replaced the broken pin, but the damaged mast affected the boat trim and they were unable to maintain their final early form, although they did manage two seconds on Sunday.

Even so, they battled on to take third place behind a Belgium competitor and the local club's ace, Richard Lambert, the former British No 1.

Royal Burnham Yacht Club's father-and-son combination, Pat and Nick Elmore, in Twist & Shout, won the second EAORA (East Anglian Offshore Racing Association) race of the year on Saturday when they finished ahead of the 10-yacht fleet in the Ralph Herring Trophy from Burnham to Ramsgate.

Conditions suited the bigger boats, with David Geaves (RBYC) new yacht, Fiona VIII, second overall and West Mersea Yacht Club's Carronade (Peter Clements and Harvey Spiro) third, making it a clean sweep for the Class 1 boats.

There was a good turnout of Burnham yachts - over half the fleet - and they were duly rewarded.

Charlie Mills and Shoot The Bar (Crouch YC) won Class 2 ahead of the RBYC's Scarlet Jester (Steve Gosling) and Ian Hart, also of the Crouch, was third in Class 3 in Ace of Hearts III.

Stone Sailing Club's Helmsman of the Year final was held in blustery conditions on Sunday, with victory going to Neil Connelly and Mike Green in their Iso, from the Buzz of Trevor and Gareth Davies.

The squibs sailed a long distance race, which took around three and a half hours to complete, with Alan and Katherine Lawson lasting the pace better than anyone else. Stan Atkins and Dennis Humphrey were second.

The Hornets were at an Open meeting at Beaumaris, Anglesey, where Strangler and Julie Hoyle finished runners-up, just ahead of Stone team-mates Russell Jelley and Caroline Barnett.
