George Young is on the verge of quitting Witham Town.

The flame-haired manager who has kept Witham in the Ryman Division Two was unhappy after being refused a bigger budget for next season.

But after being told to make an instant decision on his future he told the club he would stay though was not happy.

He said: "The acting chairman phoned me and wanted an instant decision so I said I would take it on. But my heart isn't really in it and they should not be too surprised if things change in a couple of weeks.

"There are some people at the club, on the social club side, who are conspiring to the detriment of the football side of things.

"I will be talking to the players to see if there are ways of improving and getting in more money one way or another."

Reg Wright, Witham's acting chairman, said: "He either accepts the budget or he doesn't but we need to know.

"He has told us he is staying but if he has other ideas he should tell us so we can get someone else in.

"I'm not prepared to gamble with the members' money by throwing money at the football without getting a return."

Young countered: "If they want to get someone else in they should tell me. I don't think there are many people around who can do what I've done on this budget."

"We finished one higher than Wivenhoe and since Christmas we have lost only four games in 18, if we had that sort of run earlier on we would have finished third.

"I want to take things on but we need more money to be able to compete."

Witham finished 14th in the Ryman Division Two this season after narrowly escaping relegation the previous three years.
