Ecstasy and other drugs kept Justin Young and his girlfriend together, a court heard.
Young, 28, claimed she was a junkie and he made it his business to supply her with drugs to keep their romance flourishing.
In the end Young was caught by police after they stopped him near his home in Picketts Avenue, Leigh.
Bags of cannabis resin were discovered in his Ford Escort, Southend Crown Court was told.
Young was later found to have £172 worth of drugs, which included Ecstasy, amphetamine and LSD tablets.
He admitted possessing drugs with intent to supply. He was jailed for nine months.
His barrister, Alan Budworth, said Young was led astray by the woman he had been with for three and a half years.
He added: "As the relationship grew so did her addiction to heroin. There was no commercial enterprise on his behalf. He was not supplying the public with drugs."
Mr Budworth said Young became disillusioned with his girlfriend and the couple have now split up.
