Firefighters from Dovercourt and Colchester were called to a ferry blaze at Harwich International Port.
An electrical fault started the fire in the engine room of the Stena Seatrader which was docked at the port.
The crew was evacuated and the engine room sealed off while a special gas was used to extinguish the fire.
Fire crews then went aboard the 17,000 tonne vessel using breathing apparatus and made sure it was safe.
There was heat and smoke damage to the engine room of the ship during the blaze at 7.30am on Saturday.
Bomb disposal experts and fire crews were called to a suspicious package at the Carless Refinery jetty at Harwich International Port.
Police sealed the area off and evacuated a nearby ship while trains running to the port station were cancelled.
A controlled explosion was carried out at 10.45pm on Friday - more than three hours after the original alert.
The package was not a bomb and it is believed it was a radio device which had fallen from a passing ship and floated to the jetty.
