Chelmsford Golf Club continue to ride their ongoing wave of success with wins in the Essex Golf Union Leslie Wood Trophy, the Ladies Essex Golf Union Bronze Division and the Mail on Sunday National Team Trophy.
The Chelmsford's men team entertained Frinton in the second round of the Leslie Wood Trophy under the captaincy of Barry Stiff.
The day had perfect golfing weather and by lunch, Chelmsford had put themselves into a demanding position with a 4-1 lead in the morning foursomes.
The afternoon singles followed the morning pattern, Chelmsford taking a 9.5 - 0.5 lead and making the overall score Chelmsford 13.5, Frinton 1.5.
The Chelmsford team was Julian Clark, Paul Mitchell, Tony Nicholas, Russell Townsend, David Tiney, Lloyd Kennedy making his debut, Jonathen Harris, Greg Roblin, Ken Jones and Michael Beard. Reserves, Paul Adams and Phil Hulse.
The Ladies Bronze team playing under the captaincy of Linda Parrott continued their winning run with victory over the previously unbeaten side from Three Rivers.
Due to a shortening of the last report to meet space restrictions, it appeared as Chelmsford lost to Clacton but the actual result was Chelmsford 6 Clacton 1 and this was followed by Chelmsford's 5-2 win over Three Rivers.
Chelmsford have now won three of their last four games and success in their next two away games will see them into the quarter finals. The Chelmsford team was Maureen Quinn, Diana Kendrick, Myra Metcalf, Lyn Beer, Chris Aitken, Marlene Strudwick and Nita Lloyd.
Les Cutbush, team captain for the National Mail on Sunday competition entertained Braintree in the third round of the match play event.
Looking at one stage as if the match was heading towards a draw, good concentration saw the deficit pulled back with Chelmsford winning 4-0.
The man have played their May Medal with some inclement weather affecting some of the play and this resulted in the competition standard scratch going to 70.
The winner, with a net of 60, was Paul Connell, followed by David Knights, (nett 67) on count back from Henry Bosworth and Alan Connell, Rodger Scothern, (nett 70) on countback from Keith Davies, Les McEwen, David Butt, Paul Adams, Tony Nicholas and Paul Mitchell.
Anything but Savage skies
The Captain of Regiment Way Golf Centre, Nigel Savage, had fine weather for his "Captain's Day" on Sunday.
The morning nine hole Texas Scramble was won by the four ball team of Joe Elgie, Mark Francis, John Cass and Linda Murrell with a net score of 25.
The second team was Graham Young, Dick Grimwood, Roger Jones and Kay Lawson with a net 25.4. Third team with 26.1 net was Dudley Joyce, Paul Sparrow, Ian Rawlinson and Judy Grimwood.
All three teams had the same gross 30 scores before being sorted into position by their team handicaps.
The A.M. "Nearest the Pin" was won by Dick Grimwood at the fifth hole.
The main 18 hole stableford competition played in the afternoon was won by Deborah Weire with a grand 47 points off her 35 handicap.
John Cass (27 H/C) came second with 44 points only one ahead of Paula Hawkin's 43 points off her 33 Handicap.
The afternoon's "Nearest the Pin" was won by Mike Bullman at the seventh. The Men's "Longest Drive" was won by Alan Cook at 285 yards and the Lady winner was Claire Woollard (170 yards).
Captain Nigel had made sure that all his competitors were well nourished at the halfway mark by laying on a buffet and then to finish off the enjoyable day had arranged for a disco and barbecue to follow the prize presentations.
Juniors prosper
The Junior section at Benton Hall Golf Club is going from strength to strength.
Main course members are now in excess of 50 and the launch of the new Academy membership over the Easter weekend has generated a lot of new junior members on the Par 3 'Bishops' Course.
The Easter holidays also saw the start of the Junior Open season with the following excellent results for Benton: Five Lakes: Craig Housden, Best Scratch; Graham Guthrie, 2nd Scratch; Richard Kingston U16 Scratch; Matt Bell U14 am Scratch. Chigwell: Craig Housden, 3rd Scratch; Craig/Richard Kingston/Matt Bell, Team Scratch. Stoke by Nayland Matt Bell 14 and under Nett Constable course.
The boys were also out in force in their first inter club County Youth Shield match.
Despite the windy conditions the boys beat Five Lakes 5-0, the team being Craig Housden, Gary Cornelius, Graham Guthrie, Richard Kingston and Brian Mathews).
Alison Guthrie (Junior) and Paula Higgins (Lady) recently won their first round match in the Hunter Foursomes against Thorpe Hall 7 & 5.
Forrester Spring meeting
Tuesday saw the Forrester Park Golf Club ladies section hold their Spring Meeting, a 18 hole morning stableford competition.
Lady captain Diana Ketley won with 35 points, second was Connie Murrell (34 points) and third Kate Ansley (32 points).
Nearest the pin on the ninth hole was won by Irene Hoffman and nearest the pin on the 13th Chris Myers.
In the afternoon a nine hole team competition was held with the winners being Betty Craig, Ruth Eary, Wendy Oxlade off the first tee and Maggie Lintner, Jane Ash, Jane Collier off the 10th tee.
The mens Leslie Wood team played at home against The Essex Golf and Country Club in the second round on Sunday, with the home team running out winners 8.5 to 6.5.
In the morning foursomes Forresters ran up a 4-1 lead, while in the afternoon singles, the Essex came back strongly and won the first three singles matches but the home team rallied and took the next five singles to ensure a fine win.
Special mention was made of the two juniors Andrew Myers and Lee Higgs who both came out with a 100 per cent record winning their foursomes and singles.
Four out of five
The Warren Golf Club Ladies team have now won four out of five of the ELCGA Bronze Shield matches played so far and achieved resounding 6-1 defeats of Crondon Park and Benton Hall and more recently a 5-2 victory at Thorpe Hall.
The Bank Holiday Mixed Competition, run by the Ladies Section, was a great success using a Chapman Foursomes format.
In first place on count back with 39 points were Joy and Peter Rodd, second were Lynne and Phil Kirkham and third with 37 points were Penny and Anthony Lipscomb.
The Warren recently hosted the annual Undrer 16 County match between Essex and Hertfordshire for the Cheshunt Salver.
The Essex side had a successful day finishing 12-3 winners.
Warren Cadet, Jonathan Reason celebrated gaining his first county cap by winning both his foursomes and singles matches.
Warren member Fiona Smith took up the position of Essex Girls Captain with effect from May 1.
Leslie wins again
Taking advantage of their home draw, Braintree Golf Club's Leslie Wood team chalked up another win to go into the third round.
But against Burnham at Stisted on Sunday, things were looking anything but happy for the home team as they found themselves down in three of the morning's foursome matches at the turn.
Urged on by the home supporters -- and team captain Jim Clark -- Braintree pulled themselves round to lead 4-1.
And in the afternoon's singles, although Burnham battled hard, Braintree took six points to run out 10-5 winners.
Channels enjoy their day
The Ladies of Channels Bronze Team enjoyed another league win i when they beat visitors Colne Valley G.C. 6-1.
The Channels team was Ann Malyon, Caroline Bird, Majorie Pitt, Sandra Bramley, Doreen Harrowell, Tina Daw and rookie, Karen Bennett.
Sandra was the 'odd lady out' on this occasion but having helped the team to have reached it's position of four matches played, four matches won and two to go.
The ladies played in their Spring Trophy which was won by the captain, Vera Simmons (39 points).
A tight result found Sandra Bramley in second place with the same 39 pushing Fran Thomas into third position although Fran was also on 39 points.
The next day the Lady Captain, Lis Gander and the Club Captain, Chris Simmons, played against the President and Lady President, Tony and Brenda Stubbings, in the Captains' Charity Challenge.
The Captains won and the Presidents made a generous donation to the Charity, BLISS.
