A man was left with a broken wrist after a fight between two gangs broke out on a Billericay train.
The victim needed hospital treatment after he collapsed on a platform at Billericay station.
The trouble first erupted in Southend High Street but continued on the train.
A passenger called police fearing one man had a knife. British Transport Police officers from Southend asked Basildon police to attend. The area was searched but no weapon was found.
Four men were arrested for causing grievous bodily harm and various public order offences.
A spokesman for the transport police said they had not yet been charged and inquiries were continuing.
