Canvey may still have the defence of their Essex Thames-side Trophy to consider - but thoughts are very much turning towards next season.

A couple of hours before Gulls host Blues in tonight's semi-final, manager Jeff King and coach Glenn Pennyfather will be attempting to tie-up a deal to bring another top-quality name to Park Lane.

They are having discussions with the player, who has Nationwide League experience, in the hope that he will commit his future to the club.

As far as tonight's game goes, the Islanders will not give up their hold on the superb silver galleon Thames-side Trophy without a fight.

Looking forward to the clash with particular relish will be Canvey's ex Southend United men Steve Tilson and Paul Williams.

Said King: "We have always expected that Southend would put out a very strong side for this game.

"Everyone is available for us and I will also be fielding the strongest possible line-up. It should be a very entertaining game for the fans."
