Sunday saw Burnham Rugby Club take a squad of 10 players comprising of Barclay, Bennett, Doddings, Earing, Edwards, Hart, Kelly, Morris, Tonbridge and captain of the squad Terry Wilson to the BL Sevens Tournament at Thurrock.
The first game was a close run affair with Burnham looking keen against Old Brentwoods.
Tries for Burnham came from John Doddinigs and Paul Barclay with one conversion by Brian Edwards, to give Burnham a score of 12 points.
However, a fast Old Brentwoods side managed to run in one more try and conversion to bring a final score of 19-12.
Burnham then found themselves up against an experienced Shadwell side and this time managed one try from Barclay with the final score being 25-5 in Shadwell's favour.
However the game was to prove more costly in terms of player resources as Burnham were left with a badly grazed Barclay who had to sit out the next game and Kelly who had to retire from the tournament.
Despite these strains of resources Burnham were to give their best performance of the day against Stanford and with gritty effort from all the team, and with coaching from the father and son Lovell management team, won 28-16 with tries by Tom Hart, Terry Wilson and two from Doddings and four conversions by Edwards.
However, the game was to one too far as a now exhausted Burnham side had to play against Thurrock with their squad of in excess of 20 players.
Although Burnham went through the paces and despite encouragement from the Lovells, Burnham were finally knocked out from the tournament by a fast running and relatively fresh Thurrock side.
