City ended their home season with a disappointing draw at New Lodge on Monday when they had to thank an excellent performance by goalkeeper Paul Catley for ensuring a point.

Catley, who has exce-lled since moving from Braintree Town, a club now understandably eager to snatch him back for next season, pulled off several fine saves to keep City in the game.

In fairness, City's playing resources were overstretched by injuries to say the least, particularly in midfield and at the back, and they found it difficult to cope with a livewire visiting attack.

This was epitomised in the 15th minute when schoolboy errors in the City defence allowed the busy Roy Godden to stab the ball home from close range.

City's attack was not as effective with the only real chance of the first half falling to Ian Cambridge, but he fired the ball straight at goal- keeper Barry Gartell on the half hour.

The second half was a better one for the 407 spectators, and after Catley had made two more great saves, City equalised in the 61st minute when Cambridge set up Mark Greatorex who pulled the ball back from the byline for Barry Lakin to poke home from close in.

After a couple of more scares at the other end, it was Tesfaye Bramble's turn and he was unlucky to see his fierce shot rebound off an upright with Gartwell beaten.

But a late rally from City almost snatched all the points and Lakin was unfortunate when his rasping half volley rattled the underside of the bar before being kicked clear.

A draw though was a fair result thanks in the main to Catley's display.

Chelmsford City: Catley; Coburn, Reeve, Sutton, Darton; Greatorex, Lakin, Yamazaki, Berquez; Cambridge, and Bramble. Unused substitutes: Strong, Newman and Shirley.
