A former pub could be knocked down to make way for an upmarket grocery complex.

The Prince of Wales, in Marks Tey, closed earlier this year and has been earmarked for retail development by a client of Fenn Wright.

The new owners want to sell high quality "speciality" food on the half-acre plot. A spokesman for the property firm said: "They do not want to build a supermarket. They would have a wide range of food to choose from - fresh food and deli items.

"It would be different to your run-of-the-mill shopping parade."

The new owners are interested in hearing from retailers of high quality food.

"They are conscious of the fact supermarkets do not provide everyone with everything they want, both in terms of quality and range," the spokesman added.

A planning application for the site, next to a slip road off the A12, is due to be submitted to Colchester Council in a few weeks.

The spokesman said: "Development in Marks Tey is always a sensitive issue, but we hope this will improve the site."

Eric James, chairman of Marks Tey Parish Council, said he was unable to comment on the plans because he had not yet seen them. However, he said the council would seek the views of villagers and traders before forming a view.

"When they formally submit an application, we can take into account everyone's opinion," he said.

There is already a baker and butcher's shop opposite the plot and a Londis supermarket situated nearby.
