The strength in depth of the Shaftesbury Cycling Club was once again put to the test in their promotion of their Middlemarkers and Invitation 25 mile time trial.

Last minute course changes due to roadworks and problems with a flooded car park at the HQ were not enough to faze John Williams and his efficient team of marshalls/helpers, club members travelled from as far as Suffolk to assist in the smooth running of the event.

Fastest Shaftesbury rider was Ieuan Reed with 58.09 only nine seconds off his personal best and good enough for seventh place overall.

Best ride of the day by a Shaftesbury member was by Ron Naman who improved by over seven minutes to win the Alan Oram Memorial Bowl.

The event was won by Oliver Stevens from Sussex based Multisport TC in 55.31.

The supporting invitation event which boasted ex-world and Olympic as well as national record holders was won by Peter Smith (Border City Wheelers) who travelled down from Carlisle to ride, and his time was a personal best 51.08.

Smith led his team of Rob Pope (Finsbury Park CC) and Martin Meades (API Resprays) to a first group prize of £120.00 to the charity of their choice which was the Great Ormond Street Appeal.

Times for other Shaftesbury CC riders were: Ieuan Reed 58.09 (seventh overall); Derek Buffoni 1.05.14; Wayne Greve 1.07.12; Ron Naman 1.07.45; Paul Bolton 1.08.48; Cathy Reed W 1.09.23; Derek Stagg 1.10.50; Neil Kurz 1.12.35; Colin Barnby 1.14.20; Ray Nurse 1.19.41; Dave Miesner DNS; Mick Purvis DNS.
