There were fine performances from Albyns swimmers at the Southern Counties Masters, Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Jill Whyman showed a pleasing return to form by winning the 100m backstroke.

Sybil Warn was also in excellent form, winning both 100m and 200m freestyle events, plus five silvers.

Jill Complin won four silvers and a bronze, and Daphne Gilbert three golds.

In the men's races, Jeff Whyman won silver in the 50m freestyle; John Limmer snatched third place in the 50m breaststroke and was fourth in the 100m breaststroke and 200m freestyle respectively.

Bob Carter gained a hard-earned bronze in the gruelling 200m IM and another bronze in the 50m breaststroke.

The highlight for the club was the splendid performance of the men's relay teams consisting of Bob Carter, John Barratt, John Limmer, Mike Giles and Jeff Whyman.

The team narrowly beat old rivals Romford & Spenser to win gold in the 240+ medley. They also won a bronze in the freestyle team events.

The swimmers between them gained seven gold, 10 silver and five bronze medals.

There is no upper age limit for masters swimmers - only the limits placed on oneself!

Albyns swimmers do most of their training at the Brentwood Centre under the sessions run by Dave Pettengell.

There is also a small club session on Friday evenings at Shenfield school during term times.
