Colchester United fans are pushing to have a representative of their supporters association on the Layer Road board.

Managing director Stephen Gage was asked to accept at least one fan as a director of the club.

At first Gage joked he would welcome anyone with £500,000 onto the board but seriously conceded it was something they may consider.

The supporters association hold some shares, which entitles it to attend the club's annual general meetings, but would like more direct involvement.

John Burns, vice chairman of the U's supporters association, said: "It is something we would like to have especially with so much about to happen in the next two seasons.

"The club has been very open and good to work with and we would see it as an extension of that relationship, and I'm sure it would benefit the club.

"If it was feasible we would jump at the chance of having a member or a representative on the board to give us something of say in what will happen."

The supporters were told at their recent AGM the U's would be playing in their new stadium after two more seasons at Layer Road.

That is the time-frame the U's have been given for the new 10,0000 capacity ground at Cuckoo Farm.

New outline plans will be submitted within the next three months for the stadium which will be half owned by the the football club and the other 50 per cent by Colchester Council.

Burns said: "That is good news and we are all excited. The first turning of a sod will be a great day as we know then things really are happening.

"There is some concern about the ownership but we will look in that more."

The fans were told prices would increase for next season. Burns added: "That is fate enough. We have no problems with increases so long as they are not extortionate.

"Layer Road is one of the cheapest grounds in the country at the moment and we need more cash coming in."

With Mick Wadsworth and Steve Whitton away on scouting duties the fans felt unable to ask about players' futures.

But Burns said: "Overall the mood was upbeat and optimistic. There were plenty of suggestions for fund-raising and getting involved more. For example, getting more video equipment to help Mick with coaching and a quicker availability of video-tapes.

"We are happy to have, hopefully, survived in division two. That was the aim at the beginning of the season and next season is the time to look forward once more.

"There are a lot of positive aspects and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing what happens with Mark Kinsella after being assured there was a large sell on clause.

"And we were told we have to accept we may lose Lomana Tresor Lua Lua. But if we do we can look upon it as a huge investment for the club."
