Memories of the Victorian era returned to Canvey's seafront as community leaders lit up the promenade at a special ceremony.
Mayor of Castle Point, Valerie Wells, flicked the switch to illuminate Victorian-style lights in front of a number of invited guests, including councillors and local businessmen.
About 80 residents from nearby streets were also present alongside members of the Canvey 2000 initiative, responsible for installing the lights.
The group - aiming to restore the seafront in time for the millennium - put in eight Victorian style lamps between the Labworth Cafe and the bandstand on Eastern Esplanade.
Dave Wells, leader of Castle Point Council, donated £5,000 for the new lighting, which cost about £11,000.
The globed lighting completes the first 120 metre section of work carried out to regenerate the seafront since fundraising began about 18 months ago.
Block paving has already been laid, replacing gravel paths, and new benches and litter bins have also been installed.
Chairman of the scheme, councillor Dennis Williams, said: "They look absolutely gorgeous. The amount of people that have contacted me to say how impressive they look is amazing.
"They cost us an awful lot of money, but they are definitely worth it and will be a really good investment."
