The finishing touches were today being put to a football fun day in memory of meningitis victim Darren Graves.

The teenager, from Overton Close, Benfleet, died more than a year ago from the disease and well-wishers have worked hard to provide a fitting tribute ever since.

The dream will be realised this Saturday - on what would have been his 18th birthday - when a new football pitch is officially opened at the Tarpots recreation ground in Benfleet.

His proud mum Joan said the last few details were being sorted and hoped that as many people as possible would turn out for the big day.

She said: "It is all going well and the knockout tournament is starting to take shape. It is a great feeling. We started on April 10 last year and we will finish it on April 10 this year.

"Everybody has worked very hard and it has helped bring people together."

Up to 10 teams could be taking part in the event - which will be played throughout the afternoon. It is not just for football fans either. A host of stalls and games are expected as well as a bouncy castle to keep younger visitors entertained. Mrs Graves added: "We want it to be a community day."

Fundraisers collecting money in Darren's name have raised nearly £15,000 to make the dream a reality. It is hoped proceeds from the fun day will send the final total above amount required.

Cash has been spent on improving the area and a fence to keep the pitch secure while Castle Point Council will provide the upkeep, goalposts and nettings.

Borough mayor Valerie Wells will officially launch the soccer extravaganza.
