The Shaftesbury Cycling Club racing season has started, although because of the dark mornings, there are still many riders who prefer to leave the start of their racing activities a little longer when the mornings should be a little warmer.
However, the Over-40 riders started off well, with their own V.T.T.A. 25 miles event held on the A12 from Hatfield Peverel to Stanway and back.
Seventy-eight riders were on the start sheet but there were 10 who did not start.
Shaftesbury riders were led by a brilliant ride by Terry Anderson who broke the club vets record for the distance by 20 seconds and recorded 58 mins. 13 secs.
Tony Hanlon recorded 1.4.55, Derek Stagg 1.12.11 and Michael Purvis 1.6.32, while the event was won by Ron Keeble of the 34th Nomads in 54.14, a remarkable ride on the day.
