Police are growing concerned for the welfare of a former teacher who has gone missing from her Braintree home.

An Essex Police spokesman said Mary Sheffield, 50, had been staying with her son in Nelson Gardens, Braintree, but had not been seen since Monday.

Ms Sheffield had recently moved to the town from her former home in Ladywood Gardens, Hertford. Officers believe she could be in a vulnerable and distressed state, and may have headed towards London.

The missing 50-year-old has a blue Volkswagen Golf, registration B199LPM, and police are asking the public to keep their eyes peeled for the vehicle.

Ms Sheffield is described as about 5ft 4ins tall, with short blonde hair. She is of medium build, has blue eyes, and wears oval black-framed glasses.

Anyone with information as to the missing woman's whereabouts has been asked to contact Braintree police on 01376 551312
