The future looks bright for 16-year-old Redden Court School pupil, Richard Insole, who was signed up by Southend United Football Club this week.
A member of the club's centre of excellence programme, Richard, of Oldchurch Road, Romford, has been given a SCORE scholarship.
This means he trains and goes to college for two years and could be picked for the YTS scheme. At college he will study a BTEC National diploma in sports science.
Proud mum, Sharon Insole told This Is Essex: "This is what he's always wanted. We are very proud of him because we know he's worked really hard. His manager has told us that if he stays dedicated there could be big plans for the future."
Richard was playing for the Romford Royals when he was scouted by the 3rd division club Southend United and will join the squad in September once he has finished school exams.
Mrs Lesley Aylett, head of physical education at Redden Court School in Harold Wood, said: "Competition for places on this SCORE programme is intense and we are pleased that Richard has been successful.
"We wish him well in the programme and hope to see him soon in the first team for our local side."
