Big-hearted fishing fans rallied to help a teenager who was robbed of his equipment.

Hundreds of pounds worth of tackle and free days fishing at private lakes have been donated to 12-year-old Gary, whose dad is a Harwich trawlerman.

And it is all thanks to the enthusiasm and persuasive skills of trout fisherman Nigel Richards, 63, of Colchester.

On reading about Gary being robbed by two men at Riverside Walk in Colchester two weeks ago, he spread the word.

Tackle shops did not hesitate to make offers after hearing about the attack from Mr Richards, a former builder and once crowned fisherman of the year by a trout magazine.

Ardleigh darts player and commentator Bobby George gave Gary a year's free fishing at the lakes in the grounds of his home, George Hall, again thanks to Mr Richards.

Mr Richards, who started fishing as a youngster with home-made bamboo rods, said: "Hearing the plight of the young lad and knowing he's broken-hearted, he can have whatever equipment he wants from me."

Gary - whose family have asked for his surname not to be printed - said of the robbery: "I will be more cautious about people who talk to me now."

Any witnesses to the attack should contact Colchester police on 01206 762212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
