Burnham travelled for their last league fixture knowing that they would finish mid table and that Witham were to be the club, whatever the result, to be facing relegation.
The first score came from a forwards move by a rumbling Witham pack.
However, on the restart and Witham mounting another attack, Burnham centre Neil Murray made a fine interception to run a try in under the posts to bring the scores level.
Shortly afterwards Duncan Little on his debut for the first team put a try in near the posts to give Burnham the lead.
Everything looked to be going well with both Gullen on one wing and the flying Finn on the other making good penetrating runs.
Then disaster struck just before half-time as Witham scored to bring the scores back level.
On the start of the second half Burnham attacked with scrum half Andrew Murray commanding his forwards and working with number eight Alex Knapton.
Witham them gained possession and scored a breakaway try. Witham gained the initiative and stretched their lead to 31-14.
In the last quarter Burnham took the game by the horns and threw everything into the attack, with replacement Newton quickly getting involved, and then just before the final whistle the flying Finn broke free to score the final try of the game.
All the Burnham tries were converted by full back Longley to leave the final score 31-21 in Witham's favour.
